Learning Disability
Health Review

You are receiving this letter as you are due your learning disability annual health check review. This is important and monitors your current health.

What is an annual health check?

  • An appointment that you should have with your doctor every year, even if you feel well
  • Your doctor or nurse will examine you, go through a series of questions about your health, and provide suggestions to make sure you stay as healthy as possible

How will an annual health check help you?

  • It gives you the chance to ask questions about your health, talk about how you’re feeling, your care, and any medicines you are currently taking
  • It allows any health problems to be spotted early and for you to get the right information and care. This may include a plan with your doctor or nurse about how to be healthy in your day-to-day life
  • Allows you and your doctor or nurse to get to know each other better

March For
Men’s Health!

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men,1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer and if you’re over 50, or you’re black, or have a family history of prostate cancer the risk is increased; I in 4 black or mixed black males aged over 45 will have prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Most men with early prostate cancer do not experience any symptoms. If you do notice changes in the way you urinate, this is more likely to be a sign of a very common non-cancerous problem called an enlarged prostate, or another health problem. But it is still a good idea to get it checked out. Possible symptoms include:

Difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder

A weak flow when you urinate

A feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied properly

Dribbling urine after you finish urinating

Needing to urinate more often than usual, especially at night

A sudden need to urinate

The prostate is a gland at the base of the bladder. It is about the size of a walnut but gets bigger as men get older. The prostate gland produces a protein called prostate specific antigen (PSA). A blood test can measure the level of PSA.

Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening and when cancer is spotted early, treatment is more likely to be successful. Thanks to research, treatments are kinder and more effective than ever.

You can check you risk factor on Prostate Cancer UK website www.prostatecanceruk.org/risk-checker

For information about the increased risk for black males, read more at https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information/are-you-at-risk?scrollTo=black-men
